All
programs and activities are offered to participants free
of charge. The Foundation absorbs all costs associated
with the programs. This includes uniforms, equipment, costs
associated with field trips and outings, supplies, general
operating expenses, etc. Because of the extensive
cost associated with operating our programs, outside sources
of support are necessary in order for our programs to continue
to grow and produce positive experiences for the hundreds
of children we serve.
The Foundation has created several ways in which you can get involved. Large companies; independently owned businesses; organizations; and individuals can all play a part in helping the Foundation carry out its goal of producing quality and life changing programs for so many deserving young people.
We have created a multifaceted recreational and
educational program. We hope that after exploring this site
you have seen something you would like to become a part of and
support.

Partners are
companies/businesses or organizations/groups who team up with The
Eddie Pope Foundation by offering support in many different ways. In
order to become partner, your company or group would make a
commitment to the Foundation. For example, our current partners
offer support in the form of volunteers, organization of
fundraisers, supplying field space, supplying meeting space, etc.
Unlike the corporate sponsorship, the type of commitment is not
specific. The partners commitment is one of general support in
several areas. Specific details are discussed and worked out on an
individual basis.
In return for your
support, you will receive:
- a logo listing on our
website under Partners and Friends or a listing if no logo is
available
- a listing in our
brochure
Want to give your time?
No problem we can use you and the kids need you. The following is a
list of volunteer positions. Please contact us with any further
questions.
Coaches:
Coaches would be required to commit four hours per week for a period
of late March to late August. Practices would be held during the
week and games would be either Friday evenings or Saturdays. The
coaching staff is currently comprised of all volunteers. Before
assuming a coaching position, each volunteer must consent to a
background check and take part in two orientation sessions. The
first session is for the purpose of explaining the program, the time
commitments, the communities we serve, and the expectations. The
second session is designed in the form of a training session where
coaches are provided with manuals; view video tapes; and receive
technical information regarding their positions.
Each coach receives
- 8 Balls
- A Ball Pump
- A Ball Bag
- A Set of Cones
- Coach's Bag with
two pairs of shorts and two t-shirts from Adidas
The thing to remember is
that several of our participants have never really played organized
soccer before. Our first goal is to introduce this sport to a group
of kids who do not have access to many things necessary to play this
sport: i.e. finances, equipment, fields, parental support, etc. So
you do not need to possess superior knowledge of the sport. All you
need is a love for children, adequate knowledge of the game,
creativity, and patience.
***You will have the
opportunity to take coaching training sessions through the Virginia
Youth Soccer Association - at no cost to you***

Mentors:
Mentors must be able to commit between 8 to 12 hours per month.
The difference in hours depends on the activities for the month. You
would be given a schedule prior to each month. There are three major
categories of events:
- DC United
Games
You would be expected to attend as many DC United home pages as
possible. You would sign up
for the games you would attend. You must commit to at least four
games.
-
Outings/Road Trips
There will be at least one outing per month. This could be a day
trip to the Baltimore Aquarium, an afternoon at a DC
event/museum, an outing at Wolftrap, a matinee, a cookout, etc.
Again you would know well in advance.
- Summer
Special Event
All mentors, coaches and volunteers would be expected to
participate in our "Breakaway: A Day in DC Program". During this
day the participants from our NC program spend a day in the
district with our DC participants. Mentors, coaches and
volunteers would sign up for time slots for particular portions
of the day. You would not be required to participate all day.

professionally, in our of our program areas and would like to
conduct a seminar with our children please contact the Foundation.
12th Man:
During the year the Foundation hosts special events and fundraisers.
These are times when additional team players are essential to the
success of the particular function. If you know you want to help,
but aren't quite sure how you can, please contact the Foundation and
ask about our 12th Man volunteer program.
All volunteers
must submit to a background check. They will be confidential and are
merely for the protection of the children.
